Anecdote

I went to the doctor's today to see about getting a health check on account of how my brother died of a heart attack a couple of months ago. He checked my blood pressure, which turned out to be fine, and a bunch of other indicators. I need to visit the walk-in centre for a blood test, but from the data he has at the moment the doctor was able to say that my chance of having a myocardial infarction by the age of 60 is 11%.

Except, when he factored in the fact that my brother died of a coronary at age 47, his program gave the odds as close to 23%.

In other words, because my brother died of a heart attack, my chances of having one before I'm 60 are nearly 1 in 4.

Tsk, some people just don't take others into account before they drop dead.
