Free Parking

Outburst

I had to get to the university today, because there was a staff meeting at 8:30. I thought that was a bit of an early start, but our department is going through momentous changes so OK, fair enough.

When I arrived, I parked and went to get a parking ticket. The ticket machines helpfully informed me (and everyone else who tried) that parking was free until 8:30.

Fine, fine, just give my my ticket.

Well, they wouldn't issue any tickets. I suppose the logic was along the lines of "it's free, so you don't need tickets!", which was true, but I needed to buy a ticket while they were free in order to use it for when they stopped being free. I visited every single machine and they all refused to read my (and everyone else's who tried) parking card.

Welcome to Essex University.

Needless to say, I'd misread the email telling me it was an 8:30 start and didn't actually have to be there until 9:30. Sigh...
