9:46am on Friday, 11th May, 2007:
I noticed that the household Internet connection was running slowly yesterday, as it had done the day before. On both occasions, my younger daughter had been using her PC. The thought occurred to me that it might have been infected with some virus or other and was being used as a zombie for sending out spam.
It turned out she was just watching YouTube videos. However, just to be safe I installed the anti-virus software I use (I have a 3-PC licence) and set it running.
Two hours and the removal of 288 infected files later (74 executables, the rest data), her PC was somewhat cleaner.
