Outburst

I'm giving a talk to some of Aaron Delwiche's students next week, and the chosen venue is EverQuest II. I don't have EQ2 installed on my PC, but hey, that's OK, they do a trial edition.

Sadly, it's not quite that simple.

The first problem I encountered was that it needs a better graphics card than I have on my PC (thanks, Civ4) or my laptop. I had to install it on one of my daughters' PCs.

The second problem was that once I'd get it all set up and running, it began a patch. Not just any patch, though, ohhhh no: this was a patch that it eventually estimated would take 12 hours, 47 minutes and 58 seconds. I've been running it for 2 hours so far and it looks like it's not an over-estimation.

Way to go, SOE. Provide people with a free download then hit them with a 12-hour patch.

As newbie-friendly experiences go, I've had better.
