Designing Virtual Worlds

Comment

Earlier this year, I asked the publishers of my 2003 book, Designing Virtual Worlds, for the rights to it to be reverted to me. It's very dated now and doesn't sell many copies, so I thought it would be nice if I made it available to read for free.

The publishers (New Riders) agreed, and duly went through the process of returning me the rights to the book. I couldn't publish it using New Riders' formatting, but the text was mine; I therefore copied everything from the original .pdfs into my own rather lacklustre formatting style, embedding the errata that I'd logged following its publication. There may be some minor differences in italicisation and so on as a result of this process, but it's close enough to being right as to make no difference.

Anyway, the book is now available for free at https://mud.co.uk/richard/DesigningVirtualWorlds.pdf.

It's held up reasonably well in some places but not so well in others. 18 years is a long time in virtual world development (the book predates World of Warcraft), but there may be something there of interest to people who haven't read the physical copy.
