Unrealisticness

Anecdote

Remember last year when I posted about unrealisticness in games, illustrating it with pictures of cat people from Final Fantasy XIV who are wearing human spectacles? I was asked to write it up as a formal paper and submit it to a journal, Ludology, which I did. You can read the result here.

This is actually a Spanish-language journal, although they also accept occasional articles in English (obviously). If you're a Spanish-speaker looking for a games journal to publish your work, well, there you are.

I was actually taught Spanish at school, and if Spanish-speakers spoke at an eighth of the speed they normally speak at I'd be in with a chance of understanding some of what they were saying. Unfortunately, I was taught the language as spoken by the people of Castille, which is not how it's spoken in South America and southern Spain. I'd pronounce a word such as "cereza" (meaning "cherry") as "theretha", whereas the seseo version is more "seresa". To the majority of Spanish Speakers, it therefore sounds as if I have a lisp. This isn't too bad for speaking (I can easily pronounce "cinco" as "sinco" rather than "thinco"), but for listening it's awful. I recall listening to a man in Seville trying to tell me that something cost 100 pesos and not my parsing "sien" as "thien".

One thing I do remember from school are the (rather easy) words to the song Vengan a Ver mi Granja, which is like the Spanish equivalent of Old Macdonald had a Farm. Sadly, we were told it was Venid a Ver mi Granja, so I'm not entirely sure of the utility of this.
