Feedback

Anecdote

We're big on feedback at Essex University. This is because it's one of the factors we score low in in the metrics used by newspapers in non-transparent ways to concoct their league tables. We're not allowed to remind students of the consequences for the reputation of their degree if they mark us down, but we are allowed to tell them at every opportunity that we're providing feedback and they're getting it in a timely manner, and by the way, we're providing feedback, just in case anyone asks you in a form about, you know, feedback.

So, last week I was speaking to one of my students who had applied for a job. She didn't get it, and was disappointed that the organisation hadn't sent her any feedback.

I think we may have pushed this message a little too hard.
