Anecdote

I wish my ancestors didn't go out of their way to make it hard for me to track them down.

I mentioned a few days ago that my paternal grandfather's maternal grandfather was a 5'5½" scarred drunkard with no front teeth. All I knew about his put-upon wife was that her maiden name was Mary Ann Manning. I know it's this from the birth certificate of my grandfather's mother and two of her sisters (my dad's aunts, whom he knew). It's also on Mary Ann's marriage certificate (where she's Mary Anne).

My grandfather's mother had another two sisters and a brother, whose birth certificates I didn't have (because they cost about £10 each). Nevertheless, I steeled myself and sent off for them last week, just in case they told me something new about Mary Ann that might help me find out when she was born and who her parents were.

Oh, they told me something new alright: all three gave her maiden name as being Forrester.

Thanks a bunch, Mary Ann...
