So to Speak

Anecdote

I was at the University Campus Suffolk today as part of a panel revalidating their Computer Game Design degree. One of the other people on the panel had a particular turn of phrase he rather liked: "so to speak".

When I say he rather liked it, I mean he used it in maybe one sentence in three. I must have heard him say it over 200 times.

As affectations go, it's inoffensive. However, once you've noticed it (which takes about a minute) you can't not notice it.

Personally, I just go with "er...".
