Anecdote

Years ago, I bought a universal power supply that would fit any 12V to 24V DC appliance. Unfortunately, when I actually needed it it didn't work, so I threw it out in tormented rage. However, it did mean that I was aware such devices existed, so hunted one down in the Dixons shop at Heathrow Terminal 3. I am now able to use my laptop without fear I'll empty its batteries. Its batteries are pretty good — they last six hours, perhaps more — but the last time I left my charger behind I was reduced to cadging recharges 0ff friendly colleagues, which wasn't ideal. They still ran out, too.

None of this will stop me from trying to recover my original battery pack when I'm back on campus on Monday. Hopefully, none of my students will have read this and be holding it to ransom...
