Anecdote
Looking through my list of final-year project supervisees, only now do I realise that I sent 8 or 9 emails over the summer to a student called Duncan in the belief that Duncan was his first name when actually it's his last. Calling him Duncan the whole time was therefore not quite the friendly approach I had envisaged.
Damn name-reversing email systems...
