66

Miscellaneous

It's my birthday today. I'm 66, and am now eligible for the state pension.

When I started working, the retirement age for men was 65 and for women was 60. Men complained that this was unfair, and they should retire at 60 too. As a result, the pensionable age for women was hiked up to 65. Then, because too many people weren't dying before they claimed their pension, it was raised again to 67 for everyone. However, the change was brought in in a staged fashion, which is why I get my state pension at 66 but my wife won't get hers until she's 67.

Now I'm a pensioner, I shall have to get a walking stick to wave at youngsters while telling them that I didn't die in two world wars so that people like them could sit on my wall.
