Eight Countries

Anecdote

Last last night, when I was looking for some football to watch on Youtube, I was presented with a short I hadn't asked for that said "Name Eight Countries that Start with the Letter P".

The first two were Panama and Paraguay. I though it would have taken me a minute or so to get Panama, so I watched watched the rest to see how I'd have fared with those. The fourth was Philippines, which would also have taken me a minute or so to get, but I'd already thought of the rest.

This morning, in bed, I remembered the video and tried to recall the eight countries. They were all fairly obvious, I remembered, and two were in Europe, so I quickly reeled them off. Pakistan, Portugal, Poland, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, ... that was seven. What was the eighth?

I immediately thought of Papua New Guinea, but that wasn't it. I started working my way round the map of the world in my head. Pitcairn, is that a country or some kind of crown dependency? It wasn't one of the ones mentioned in the video, anyway. Palestine? That depends on which country you're in when you're askled, and that wasn't one of the eight, either. I vaguely remembered some island with a short name starting with P, out in the Pacific, but my geography of that part of the world isn't great as I haven't played any games set there. Pilau? No, that's a kind of rice. Palau? Could be, but it wasn't the one on the list, there were no obscure countries there.

Eventually, I had to concede defeat. When I got up, I hit Youtube and pulled up the video I'd watched the previous night.

It was actually called "Name Seven Countries that Start with the Letter P".
