Anecdote

I was in Sainsbury's at the weekend, and periodically they played an announcement over the PA system that said if you buy something now and the price goes down before Christmas then they'll give you a voucher for the difference.

Hmm. Telling people that prices will be coming down in the future is basically saying you're ripping them off in the present.

The way they were pushing this, it was as if they thought it would reassure people that it was safe to buy things now rather than wait. You can see some kind of corporate logic there. However, no-one expects prices to drop before Christmas: they expect prices to rise. It's as if a coffee shop offered you a rebate if your coffee got hotter between your buying it and your drinking it.

We didn't keep our receipt, so won't be claiming a voucher if by some strange quirk of global supply chains the price of a tube of toothpaste did drop between now and Christmas.
