Anecdote

When I cranked up Outlook yesterday, it complained that my essex.ac.uk email account was no longer in existence. I therefore deleted it from my list of email accounts. All my Office 365 programs were also unusable, but I'd bought my own version a while back so just had to remove my Essex University login and use my own.

I noticed in the middle of the day that I still had an invitation to attend a full-staff Zoom meeting being held by the acting Vice Chancellor. I tried it out, and it worked. I didn't stay long, because I basically just wanted to know if it worked, as it did occur to me that the removal of my staff account might take some time to propagate through the university's systems.

My phone complained about not being able to access my university email too, so I also deleted it from there.

In the evening, at around 11:15pm, I got around to removing the university bookmarks from my browser. One of them, to a system called LEAP, was always much more lax in terms of identity-testing than the other university systems are, so I wondered if it worked. I tried it, and it did. I then tested the HR bookmark and it asked for two-factor identification (which I didn't attempt). There was a web access to email, though, which also asked for two-factor identification. This, I did test, and it let me in.

There was an email waiting for me. This is how it began:

Woohoo! I'm now Emeritus Professor Bartle!

I'm beyond pleased with this.

I tried to access the HR site so I could download my P45 (for non-UK readers, that's my end-of-employment form), but the two-factor identification failed (twice).

I rather enjoyed not being interrupted by university emails yesterday, so am now wondering whether to jump through all the hoops to add my restored University email to Outlook again to see if it works, or whether I should only look at them when I feel like it. I'm thinking the latter.
