Coronated

Anecdote

I thought the coronation yesterday was pretty good. The ceremony was an hour longer than it needed to be, but I suppose it was a stalling tactic so they could assemble 4,000 soldiers outside.

There were several moments where I felt a surge of unexpected national pride. The bit where they annointed The King behind screens was extraordinary. You don't get that with presidents.

If anyone ever wants to show schoolchildren how fast sound travels, they just need to look at footage of the "hip, hip hooray" done in the palace gardens. The raising of headwear ripples back as the order to cheer reaches each line.

A lot of younger people are anti-monarchy, but that's always been the case. It tends to change as they get older. The thing is, even if we replaced the monarchy with a presidency, the ousted monarch (or, if they were a jerk, their heir) would stand and win.

I'm sure that with today's technology, the Red Arrows could release dye into their exhausts at co-ordinated, pulsed intervals and make aa Union Flag instead of what looks more like a French Tricolour.
