Anecdote
I was in Sainsbury's today and overheard a woman saying to her (I assume) husband that they needed some pain au chocolat, only she prounounced it something like "pay-no shocka laa". It was as if she was fine using the French pronunciation for "au chocolat" but not for "pain".
Then again, maybe her husband has digestion problems or something.
