Tough Choices

Anecdote

This afternoon, we have to decide who gets the final PhD places available through the IGGI Doctoral Research Centre for this year. In terms of applicants to Essex University, we have narrowed it down to a group of individuals all of whom are of PhD calibre. Ideally, we'd take them all, too; sadly, though, we can't do this. There are twice as many of them as we have studentships available. We therefore have some very tough decisions to make. It's never easy telling someone who is eminently qualified for a studentship that we can't take them even though we want them, but it's going to have to be done.

It would be so much easier if we could make the decisions like they do on the Britain's Got Talent. We'd simply choose the people who have suffered the most personal tragedy in their lives but who are still smiling heroically and have got this far against all the odds. Or if they had a cute dog or something, that would work too.
