Alarmed

Anecdote

Two of the smoke detectors in our house have started making those "I've run out of batteries" beeps they make when they've run out of batteries (or, given that they still have the energy to beep, are about to run out of batteries). As I don't have any batteries in stock of the right kind for either of them, I had to take the old batteries out to shut them up and they won't get replaced until the weekend.

So, if you're an arsonist planning to set fire to my house in the next couple of days, could you postpone it until I get the alarms up and running again?

At least they had the decency to fail before bonfire night.
