Weird

I bought five editions from (well how about that?) 1869 of Peterson's Ladies National Magazine, an American magazine for women that is a lot more interesting than the rather more turgid Gentleman's Magazine despite its obsession with French fashion and how to tie your hair in elaborate knots. I particularly liked this from the January issue:



You don't find that kind of thing in women's magazines today. Mind you, you don't find sulphuric acid on sale in the shops, either.
