Outburst

Reading through all these assignments, I've lost count of the number of students who can't distinguish between "there", "their" and "they're". Some of them can't even spell one of those — I've seen "thair" and "ther". I can see, fifty years from now, there'll only be one way of spelling it because no-one will know the difference.

What prompted this outburst, by the way, is the following joke from a Christmas cracker I pulled on Sunday at a pre-birthday party at my mum's house:



Christmas cracker jokes are supposed to make you wince, but not because of their low level of literacy.

Oh well, at least I've managed to fine one student (so far) one mark for misspelling "losing" as "loosing". As this is a technical term I warned them about misspelling in the very first lecture and the very first class of CE217, they don't get to appeal...
