As I write this, Pope John Paul II is still alive.
I don't begrudge his still being alive — good luck to him. I don't like the idea of dying, either. I just wish that the Vatican press office hadn't been telling us he was on the verge of death for a period of time nearly as long as his predecessor was in office. Prince Ranier III of Monaco is also close to death, but we don't get cryptically anxious bulletins from his press office relating every twist and turn of his demise.
Then again, maybe if the Pope weren't ill, perhaps we would. News reports don't seem to be able to cope with more than one famous person dying at the same time.
