Student Tastes

Anecdote

Every year, I direct my second-year students to play a set of six old-time games, so I can ask questions about them in the exam and the students can't claim they've never heard of them. For each game, I then ask them whether they liked it, loathed it or didn't really care about it either way.

A few years ago, I started noting down the results. Here they are, from most-liked to least-liked:

2011/2012
Asteroids
Tetris
Frogger
Rogue
Pong
Zork

2012/2013
Tetris
Frogger
Asteroids
Pong
Rogue
Zork

2013/2014
Frogger
Tetris
Asteroids
Rogue
Pong
Zork

2014/2015
Tetris
Zork
Asteroids
Frogger
Pong
(The Rogue I linked to wasn't available)

2015/2016
(I lost what I wrote it down in)

2016/2017
Pong
Tetris
Asteroids
Zork
Frogger
Rogue

Normally, Pong is in the bottom half. This cohort of student put top (18 for, 3 against, 6 abstain), a clear two votes ahead of perennial favourite Tetris (16 for, 2 against, 9 against). It's weird how tastes change.

There were 27 students in the class, which is only 19 fewer than there were supposed to be.
