Anecdote
The new Colchester visual arts facility, Firstsite, opened at the end of last month at a cost of millions of pounds more than the millions of pounds budgeted for it. I was in town today, so I thought I'd pay it a visit.
Hmm. It's not so much money well spent as money, well, spent. Many of the current exhibits are reproductions of images I could see better reproduced on the Internet if I wanted, and overall it was quite low on content. I've nothing against contemporary art per se, but I do think there ought perhaps to be more of it in a building that size.
Maybe if they'd designed it with more vertical walls, that would have helped...
