A note to all drivers of 2007 Ford Focus Sports: when an emergency error message appears on your instrument panel reading, "ENGINE SYSTEMS FAILURE", it does not necessarily mean that you have an engine systems failure. It could, instead, mean that when you replaced a burnt-out rear brake light with a new bulb, that new bulb had only one filament instead of two.

I don't know why it chooses to display this particular message when the more obvious "BRAKE LIGHT FAULT" mentioned in the owner's handbook would seem to be more appropriate, but if it had gone with the latter then it would have saved me the £15 I had to pay the service centre to diagnose the problem and fit a replacement bulb...
