Headline News

Weird

Two notable headlines from this week's Essex County Standard:

This looks like a typical attempt to make a pun in a headline, which is standard fare for UK magazines and newspapers. The guy is a gravedigger, so when the people in his local pub raise funds for him they must be "digging deep", har har. What makes it unusual, however, is that the gravedigger has died and the people in the pub were raising money for him to be buried. Still, later in the article we find out that they had to do so because he had no relatives, which means the ECS's pun-first-sensitivity-second approach is unlikely to offend his close family...

The second headline is just plain weird.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's ...

Or perhaps she's some new-fangled variation of the elephant man.
